Glasses.

When J was 4, his pediatrician gave him an eye exam.  He seemed to struggle a bit with the left eye but he was also 4 and somewhat impatient and bored by the exam, so the nurse chalked it up to him just being “done” with it and we moved on.  However, after struggling with his eye exam a second time at his 5 year old appointment, they recommended we see an ophthalmologist.  So we did.  I was completely blown away when all he could see was the big “E” on the letter chart with his left eye.  I actually thought he was fooling around and started to get annoyed until I realized he was being 100% honest.  Turns out he has an astigmatism in his left eye and due to the fact that his eye wasn’t properly focusing, his brain just stopped using it.  This caused the vision in his left eye to plummet.  All the way to 20/400.  It’s called a “lazy eye” not to be confused with a “wandering eye.”  So now the kid’s sporting a new look – he picked those glasses out all by himself and even though the mom in me is sad that I don’t get to see his face the way I’ve been used to seeing it for the past 5 years, I do think he looks rather handsome in them.
